The old custom of binding the feet (1) of the Chinese girls have vanished almost entirely in the present. Young people today have only heard stories of this practice, since there are very few women with bound feet still life. Still, there is a town where many women still live with bound feet, but is against the law.
Beijiao In the town of the province Fujian, more than 20 elderly ladies, most around 80 years, who have bound feet, also known as "lotus flowers" the size of about 7cm and a half, maximum 8. According to the Shenzhen Press Group of China, the people Beijiao, an isolated coastal village in the Town Tailu Fuzhou city, is the last village of women with bound feet in Fujian and throughout China.
One of the women with lotus feet, Lin Fengfeng 81, said in an interview on July 3, 2007 they began tying his feet when he was five years old in 1931. Although this custom disappeared in most of China since the end of the imperial era, and winnowing of the first Republic during that period, the foot binding was still a popular practice in most nations. Women are still considered to have a pair of small feet as a sign of feminine beauty, and in fact still discriminated against them to have normal feet, they could not get husbands of equal or greater welfare of their family of origin.
Fengfeng During childhood, girls often compared the size of their feet to see what was the smallest and most beautiful. The child with the smaller foot became the envy of others, this meant that, to grow, have young suitors proposing marriage alliances to parents.

Despite their years, these women's bound feet are so concerned about their appearance and four

ndo were young. When strangers meet, dress, makeup, comb their hair and wear their favorite shoes.
Few of these women have left Tailu, except one, who once went to Fuzhou to see a doctor. In fact, they are not interested in the outside world, however, are happy to live peaceful lives and calm with their families. Still have the old mentality of peace and attachment to their own hometown.
Village men work hard in the sea all year round, are exposed threats of typhoons and storms regularly, usually do not live as long as their wives. Therefore, all these bound feet women are widows who live with their children and grandchildren.
Those who are still helping the family as best they can with their skills, doing laundry, cooking and mending fishing nets, etc. When tasks allow, get together to chat or play cards.

The most popular legend says that one day of the tenth century, a courtesan of the imperial palace, famous for her beauty and talent to the dance, was ordered to prepare a dance to the delight of the Tang Emperor Li Yu, in honor of the spirits. It was ordered built for her a floor made of golden lotuses which could execute their dance. He adorned the body with the most magnificent jewels and bandaged feet imitating the shape of the crescent. His name was Yao Niang, ie, sad girl.
Wanting to emulate her beauty, all women of the court and the rest of the empire bandaged their feet and their daughters, and nearly one billion Chinese who were born after them.

This practice has been around for at least 2,000 years. The process of dressing began when the girls were between 4 and 6 years, and was made by the mother. The feet were put to soak in water with some herbs to eliminate all the remains of dead skin, and nails were cut as much as possible. Do not exceed three inches feet was the establishment.
After a massage, the 4 smaller toes were broken. Then they blindfolded with silk or cotton wool soaked in liquid, pressing his fingers against the heel. Every two days the bandage was removed and returned to performing. The process lasted two years. By then, only a foot measured 10 cm.

The only parts in contact with the ground were his calloused heel and toe. Incredibly, these "beautiful" feet were for nearly a millennium, the most hidden treasure of Chinese women and more dreaming pleasure of his men.
For the lotus feet became gilded-work of art and object of desire, should measure only three inches and have the following characteristics: being thin, small, pointed, arched, fragrant, smooth and symmetrical. According to Dr. Ko Chi-sheng says, a woman naturally bound feet walk in a seductive, "like a tender shoot of willow in a breeze of spring." Although husbands rarely actually can see the bare feet of his wife, by the very strong smell that emanates from skin putrefaction, also men succeed much to see some small bound feet, by walking supposedly faltering man inspired a sense of protection towards women.

Note: [1] The practice of foot binding may have started during the reign of Li Yu (or Li Houzhu), the third and last emperor of the Southern Tang Dynasty (937-975 AD) was prohibited for the first time in 1911.
