HISTORY OF SCRIPTURE CHINA - PART 1

WRITING THE ORIGINS OF CHINA

Chinese writing was fully developed after the second half of the Shang Dynasty (XIV-XI BC). In this period we have examples of writing in bone and turtle shells, for most divinatory texts, writing on oracle bones called in Chinese Jiaguwen, we also found written on bronze Jinwen. In this period and the writing was fully developed, is capable of complete and unambiguous evidence. It is thought that the incubation period to reach that level was quite long, but the few examples above to the fourteenth century are too scarce to allow a complete reconstruction of history. It was also thought that writing began to form during the previous dynasty, the Xia, about s. XVII
BC and is believed at this time was known to use the brush, but unfortunately DePere materials do not allow us to see any examples of this type of writing. We also have to remember that both the bones and bronze are hard materials, so the characters will always be plenty of angulation. From the beginning the Chinese script was morphemic and monosyllabic. Homophonous syllables are represented by different characters, differently from other syllabic scripts (eg Japanese) For example, shǒu "head" and shǒu "hand" are represented by different characters. The first Chinese writing is clearly representative, ie a drawing depicting what is meant. As needed to accelerate the process writing, was first used style drawings.

to represent more abstract concepts used various tricks, for example, to write
shàng
"up" designed a horizontal line and a shorter one above it (Table 1);

xia "down" is written in reverse. Wei

word "circumvent" the 4 characters written with "feet" around an empty square, possibly a closed city walls. In all these cases there is no reference to the sound or pronunciation of the word in cuastión. These mechanisms proved to be inadequate because it was necessary to take into account the pronunciation of words. One way is the same as the principle of rebus: creates a glyph composed of part of the meaning and another that determines min
the pronunciation, eg word lai "come." solution was to take the character of a homophone. In this case took the pistograma lai "grain." grammatical elements and is very difficult to represent, were determined by phonetic loans. There were also characters that had nothing to do with meaning. For example Wu "five" written with an X, and qi "seven", written by a cross. Another mechanism is the phonetic composition. The character is a composite of a semantic pictogram with another that determines the sound, but not homophobic. For example láng "wolf" was written with the character quan "dog" on the left and liang (meaning "good") to the right. With the increasing use of these techniques ambiguity began to dissolve. The common notion that Chinese characters represent ideas rather than words is wrong
, as each character expresses a precise thing, a word, not a concept

a word: hence the term ideogram is not entirely correct.
The script then matured and became more stylized pictograms and lost their quality of painting, as it needed to simplify and streamline the linear structure of the characters to use more diffuse. Straighten the lines and acute angles. in popularizing writing, continued to produce a simplification, which is now far from the original drawing. In Winnowing the Warring States period and scripts of different regions. when the first emperor Qin Shi Huang Di in 221 BC took power, it also reflects a great diversity in different types of writing in the many areas of China.

Coding writing under the Qin Empire

Qin Empire tried to standardize the writing as well, also the weights and measures. China was taken as the Qin writing course, and it remains one of the more conservative styles, was preserved continuity with the style pasado.Este was composed of two types of writing: it stamps, or zhuànshū , who had a regular and balanced style. The most popular writing optra is used lishu

or write, was a much more streamlined style than the first and highly evolved.
