differential compaction

A phenomenon that occurs after the deposition of some sediments so that different parts of the sediment accumulation develop different degrees porosity or settle unevenly during burial under successive layers of sediment. This can be located on an uneven surface, as the next and a reef structure, or near a growth failure, or different susceptibility to compaction. porosity in a formation that has undergone differential compaction can vary considerably from one area to another.
